The answer to how many people play Fortnite isn't easy to answer because official numbers aren't always released regularly. When there's a big event and an even bigger player count, there are figures and stats all over the place. But, if there aren't bigger numbers to talk about Epic can often be oddly quiet. That's not to say the numbers aren't still good, they're just not bigger than the ones previously revealed.

That makes sense really - Epic are only going to release numbers when it's got something to show off. And stats are often released after big moments like concerts and season events which are huge numbers compared to normal week. Unreleased numbers can still be massive, just not 'Ariana Grande Rift Tour' massive. The last officially released figures comes from December 2020's end of season event, which was the kind of huge that's hard to beat.

Then there all the different ways of counting things: registered players, concurrent players and so on. Which can make things confusing if you're not clear one what the differences are. So coming up we're going to take a look at how many people play Fortnite based on what we know, what's been released and more.

How many people play Fortnite?

The basic Fortnite player count is currently around 3 million for general online players at any given time. Although that's a third party estimate and nothing to do with Epic.

The last official Epic numbers come from the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 Galactus event in December 2020. That saw 15.3 millions players logging concurrently to see the season close - a big jump from the previously touted number of 12.3 million players that all logged in at once to watch the Travis Scott event back in April 2020.

That's also an impressive increase from the 10.8 million concurrent players that logged on for the in-game live Marshmello concert in February 2019. The numbers Epic have released are always going up and while there haven't been any updates recently we are in the middle of pandemic, and it's hard to beat a 15.3 million peak.

What's really interesting however is the number of registered players. That's a tally of all the Fortnite accounts that exists. It doesn't represent the active player though, as it counts every single account that exists, even people that signed up once and then never played. But, while it's not a great way to see how many people are playing Fortnite it is a good indication of the game's success. Especially when that number goes up  - in March 2019 there were 250 million registered players in total, however in May 2020 that number jumped to 350 million:

So that's an increase of 100 million registered accounts in just over a year. That is not a number to be ashamed of.

One thing that's harder to work out is how Fortnite stacks up against other games. Because so many of these stats are cherry picked from super successful moments and not often updated it's hard to compare things directly. You can sort of guesstimate things though. The highest number of Fortnite players active in a month was recorded in August 2018 at 78.3 million. For comparison, Apex Legends boasted '70 million players' in Oct 2019, while the original battle royale, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, hit a 400 million player peak in June 2018, and 3.24 million concurrents in January 2018,  but currently has a peak monthly players count around 886,255 for April 2020. Warzone on the other hand hit 50 million players in April 2020.

It all points to Fortnite continuing to be the biggest battle royale out there for the time being.
