"Try Again" is a song recorded by American singer Aaliyah for the soundtrack to the 2000 moving-picture show Romeo Must Die. It was written by Static Major and Timbaland, and produced by the latter. The vocal features an intro in which Timbaland pays homage to Eric B. & Rakim by rapping the duo's opening verse from "I Know You lot Got Soul". "Try Again" was released as the lead unmarried from Romeo Must Die on March 21, 2000, past Blackground Records and Virgin Records. Information technology was later included as a bonus track on international editions of Aaliyah's eponymous 3rd and concluding studio anthology (2001).

"Try Again" was met with positive reviews from music critics and enjoyed commercial success. In the The states, information technology peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the offset single to achieve number i based solely on airplay. The song peaked inside the top five in Kingdom of belgium, Canada, Denmark, Frg, Republic of iceland, the Netherlands, Kingdom of norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. The accompanying music video for the vocal was directed past Wayne Isham and won 2 MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. Writing and production [edit]

In 1999, Aaliyah landed her first picture role in Romeo Must Die (2000), a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Aaliyah starred opposite martial artist Jet Li, playing a couple who fall in dearest amid their warring families. It grossed Usa$eighteen.half-dozen million in its first weekend, reaching number two at the box role.[1] In addition to interim, Aaliyah served as an executive producer of the film soundtrack, to which she contributed 4 songs, including "Try Again".[2] Aaliyah revealed that the production squad "really talked about the soundtrack before we fifty-fifty shot the movie".[3]

"Endeavour Again" was recorded at Sound on Sound Studios in New York Metropolis and was originally written as an inspirational vocal.[4] It was written by Stephen "Static Major" Garrett and Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, and produced past the latter.[v] According to engineer Jimmy Douglass, it was "written to inspire young people, merely Barry [Hankerson] heard it and told them, 'It's got to be almost love'."[4] Later on all the changes were fabricated to the song, the melody and hook remained the same just the lyrics became love-themed.[4] On the song Aaliyah "encourages a potential partner not to surrender on her".[6]

Music and lyrics [edit]

Musically, "Try Again" is an R&B, electro, and trip the light fantastic toe-pop song.[7] [8] Its production "skews more toward the fuzzy electronic sounds of the future than the thumping hip-hop beats of the by".[ix] Yahoo! The chorus line "If at outset you don't succeed, then dust yourself off and attempt again" is hypnotically repeated in a fashion similar to the sampling and vocal manipulation plant in business firm music.[13] According to Musicnotes, the song is composed in the fundamental of C small-scale and is gear up in time signature of common time with a tempo of 92 beats per minute, while Aaliyah's vocal range spans from G iii to Yard four.[v]

To promote "Effort Over again" and Romeo Must Dice, Aaliyah performed the song during numerous televised appearances. It was beginning performed alongside "Come Dorsum in I Slice" on Romeo Must Die: The Get-go Special, which aired on MTV in March 2000.[25] Aaliyah performed information technology again on The Rosie O'Donnell Prove on April 17.[26] On April 26, she performed the song on both Total Request Live and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[27] [28] To promote "Try Again" in the United Kingdom, Aaliyah performed it via satellite on the July 21, 2000 episode of Summit of the Pops.[29]

Disquisitional reception [edit]

Chuck Taylor from Billboard felt that Aaliyah had another smash hit on her hands and praised her vocal styling by proverb: "Aaliyah'southward sultry vocals slide all over the futuristic beat out". However, he had a mixed response to the production; although he thought the synth sample and snare alternate lived up to his expectations, he ultimately felt that the synth sample "becomes grating as the song progresses."[30]

Synopsis and Fashion [edit]

The accompanying music video for "Try Again" was directed by Wayne Isham.[63] It begins with Jet Li entering a hall of mirrors and Aaliyah stepping in, wearing a revealing depression-cut bra and tight depression-rise leather pants, Timbaland is too shown. The room is dim with a shallow pool and circle low-cal in the center to resemble the moon shining over the ocean represented by said pool. In an interview with Nylon, Lee mentioned that he knew Try Again was going to exist a dance video and that she was going to "article of clothing one outfit for the entire thing".[64] For the music video Aaliyah is wearing a crystal bra height with a matching choker by Dolce & Gabbana.[65] According to her former stylist Derek Lee "the crystal bra peak offered and then little coverage that LeGrand had to add some actress rows of rhinestones and so Aaliyah felt more than comfortable".[65] Prior to the video Lee had a working relationship with Dolce & Gabbana , and he seen an advertizement for the peak, in Faddy "for something that was coming out for pre-order".[64] Afterwards seeing that advertisement he knew that outfit would be the wait for the video "Because if nosotros needed to level up on her lilliputian bra tops with the amorphous pants, maybe we should become this route".[64] Dolce & Gabbana had multiple colors of the bra but Lee opted for the plain crystal because it had the matching chugalug and choker.[64]

The music video for "Try Again" made its official television receiver debut on MTV during the week of March 5, 2000.[66] On the calendar week of March 12, the video debuted on the cable network channel VH1.[67] Meanwhile, during the calendar week of March 19, the video debuted on The Box, while it debuted on BET on April three.[68] [69] During its chart run, the video received heavy television set airplay on multiple music video countdown shows. For the week ending May eight, the video was the most played video on BET.[lxx] On MTV, the video was the third most-played video during the week ending May 22.[71]

Legacy [edit]

Endeavor Again" became the first airplay track to reach No. ane on The Billboard Hot 100 without the benefit of a retail single.[72] George Michael sampled "Try Once more" in his 2002 song "Freeek!".[73] German NDH ring Knorkator covered the song on their anthology Ich hasse Musik. In a 2013 episode of The Mindy Projection, Dr. Danny (portrayed by Chris Messina) showed Mindy (portrayed by Mindy Kaling) the choreography from the song'due south music video.[74] [75] The song is ranked at number 225 on Billboards Greatest of All Fourth dimension Songs of the Summertime nautical chart.[76] On August 21, 2019, the Madame Tussauds Las Vegas revealed a wax figure of Aaliyah. The life-sized figure was modelled on Aaliyah'southward advent in the music video for "Try Once more".
